Check for black spots
Go for prawns that have glossy surface and translucent. Avoid very visible black spots on prawn head, body or tail, these black spots are the result of oxidation. It serve as an indication of its freshness, the more visible black spots it has, the more less fresh it is.
Avoid strong smell
When the shrimp starts to decay, it gives off ammonia smell.
Is it in One Piece
Fresh prawn eyes, head, legs and tail are intact and not easily falling apart. Stay away from the ones that do, it is no longer fresh.
